2016 SVCC National Chess Day Report
2016 National Chess Day Tournament Report
On the weekend of October 8th, chess clubs across the United States held gatherings to celebrate National Chess Day.
In Winchester, Virginia, fourteen players converged at The Greene Turtle for Swiss style tournament event.
After five hours of fantastic competition, two winners emerged:
Jake Tarallo (below on right) won overall 1st place and Adriaan Verspoor clinched 2nd.
The Game of the Day may have been the battle for 2nd between Adriaan Verspoor and Heather Fitzsimmons (pictured below).
Everyone battled magnificentally, but they played exceptionally tough.
Heather, who was also the youngest participant, deserves an honorable mention!
A huge THANK YOU to The Greene Turtle Winchester who provided the perfect venue for an intense competition.
It was a first visit for many and they were awesome hosts!
Nathan Courtney provided expertise that helped us achieve smooth progression through five rounds of complex tournament play!
Thank you to the participants and parents who traveled from many parts of Virginia and West Virginia to make this day great!
Thank you again to the Greene Turtle and our local Crown Awards. In March 2016 we held our biggest tournament to date for elementary students at Handley Library.
With a few meetings before holiday break, I wish to thank everyone for continuing to support our chess effort.
We believe in the game of chess and its unique ability to bring people together.
We welcome the opportunity to challenge each other to get better and stronger.
We have a special program on our hands.
Stay turned for more ideas on how we can keep building into 2017!
