Updates:

We are planning a tournament for June 28th at Handley Library.  Registration, times, cost, and style are TBD.  We are considering a dual tournament:  1) a beginners section to familiarize players to tournament chess, and 2) a USCF-rated event for USCF members and unrated players who feel ready for more competitive play.

Medals and trophies will be awarded to top section finishers.

First round is scheduled to begin at 10:30AM.  More details to follow.

Please review the following link on USCF-Rated tournaments:

Important Notes:

1)  The beginners section will be geared towards teaching tournament chess.  Pairings will be made according to playing strength rather than age requirement.  We expect many kids to be more active in the beginners' section.  However, if a young player feels ready to play in an intermediate / expert section, they are highly encouraged to do so.  Vice versa, if an older player wishes to play in the beginner section, they are highly encouraged to do so.

2)  To receive an official rating in a rated tournament, one must generally be a member of the United States Chess Federation.  I have membership forms and information if anyone is interested.  More information can be found at uschess.org, or inquire with me at This email address is being protected from spambots. 3)  Players will need to supply their own clocks, boards, and game notation materials.

Thank you very much to all who helped with the brainstorming process.  Details are fluid and may change, so please stay tuned as it is work in progress.  I will need volunteers to help with coaching and planning as June 28th draws nearer.
We expect to learn as we go and have more events in the future.

+  We will begin a fund-raising drive to offset tournament costs and to facilitate future club activities.  We have accomplished so much already on a shoestring budget, thanks to the generous contribution of community leaders and club participants. We have been fortunate to utilize free space, excellent web support and nearly unlimited chess resources.  As an affiliate of the USCF, our Chess Club is now eligible for science and education grants.  Needless to say, the pieces are moving behind the scenes. We are pointed in a very positive direction.  Stay tuned for more info on how you can contribute financially as we continue to progress.

+  We will continue one-on-one workshops and tutorials to teach chess terminology and tactical strategy.  There is so much more to teach and explore on all skill levels.  We are very excited to see where these next months will lead.

As always, bring your boards, yourself, and a friend.

All Events are FREE and Open to the Public.

Hope to see you soon!
